Modern art is defined as any type of artwork that has been created during the 20th century (and, of course, the opening years of the 21st century). It can be found in paintings, sculpture, and photography, as well as other genres.
Modern art paintings encompass all areas of the color spectrum. A piece of artwork may be so rich in color that one could study it for hours and still not see every color and shade that the artist used, or the starkest of black and white lines and shading. Another artist may use the softest pastel colors that exist, for a more muted effect.
Many current modern artists are using the pictures within a picture scheme. There is a main image, or subject, usually situated front and center, but all around are lighter, more subtle images complementing the primary one.
Modern art sculptures may be very convoluted or simply lean and mean, with few, if any, deviations from the main body of the sculpture itself. Materials used are as varied as the styles.
While paintings and sculpture are still a big part of the modern art scene, more and more artists are turning to the all-seeing eye of the camera as inspiration and indeed creation of their artwork. The photographs taken may be as simple and one-dimensional as the sun setting over the ocean, or multi-dimensional (the sun setting over the ocean superimposed over a picture of the sun setting behind mountains, for instance.)
Again, the color scheme may run from the most vivid of colors to a black and white photograph that is just as powerful for its lack of color.
One thing about modern art is that, no matter which type you prefer, all genres of painting, sculpture, photography, and others, can be introduced or incorporated into a home decor setting with little or no problem. In fact, the addition of a new painting or piece of sculpture, or framed photograph may be all it takes to totally change the mood of a room without having to change anything else.
The adventurous or imaginative person who finds a piece of modern art and plans the home decor around that particular piece will be able to mix and match colors and styles with ease. The artwork will set the tone, and from there it is only a matter of finding the furnishings and accessories to complement it.
